5 Tasks to Add to Your Fall Cleaning List

Jewelry- Over time, sterling silver jewelry can be prone to tarnishing due to the oxidation of the alloy metals. Luckily, there is an easy fix to make your favorite sterling silver pieces look brand new again! First, line a bowl with aluminum foil, with the shiny side facing up. Then add a mixture of two tablespoons salt, two tablespoons baking soda and two cups of boiling water. This will create a basic chemical reaction. After five to ten minutes, remove the jewelry from the solution, rinse under warm water, and buff gently with a soft cloth. Be sure to avoid using this method on pieces that have porous stones or gems, such as pearls, turquoise, or shells, as they may be damaged by the process.

Shoes- As we switch our wardrobes from warm weather sneakers to cool weather boots, let’s make sure they’re nice and clean for next year! First, take a dry brush to remove loose dirt. Next, especially for white or lighter colored shoes, use a paste made of baking soda and water to work into any areas of discoloration. An old toothbrush is a great tool to use for this! A solution of water and dish soap can then be used throughout the inside and outside of the shoe, as well as on the laces. After rinsing, let air dry for at least eight hours before wearing or storing away for the season.

Vacuum- First, make sure your vacuum is unplugged and you are outdoors or in a well-ventilated area, since this cleaning project can get quite dusty! Begin by removing the hair from the roller brushes underneath. This build up can prevent the brushes from really getting into your carpet to pick up dirt. If your vacuum has a bag, be sure to replace as needed- it may be more often than you think! If it does not have a bag, use a damp microfiber cloth to wipe out the inside of the canister, and allow it to fully air dry before replacing. As a bonus, don’t forget to clean the wheels of your vacuum! This is an easily missed step, but important in order to prevent dirt from being ground into your carpet.

Air vents- A clean air vent is critical to a dust-free home! Use a screwdriver to remove the vent at each corner. Fill a clean sink with hot soapy water, and allow the vents to soak for only a few minutes. Upon removal, use a microfiber cloth to wipe away any excess dust and debris, and rinse with cool water. Leave them to air dry fully before replacing.

Coffee maker- There’s nothing better on a chilly fall morning than a hot cup of coffee! For the freshest cup, it’s important to make sure your coffee maker is as clean as your favorite fall mug. Add four cups of undiluted vinegar to the reservoir where you usually add water, and let sit. After about 30 minutes, run a full cycle with the vinegar. After this cycle is complete, follow with fresh water to rid the machine of the vinegar taste and smell. This may take two to three more cycles.

We hope these tips help you start a fresh, clean October!
