How Can You Make Your Laundry Routine More Eco-Friendly?

Laundry might be a household chore you barely think about, but it can have a surprisingly big impact on your home’s environmental footprint. Washing and drying just one load every other day can generate up to 440 kg of CO₂e every year—not to mention the chemicals that can find their way into our waterways.

The good news? Small changes can make a big difference. From skipping a wash day to ditching chemical-laden detergents, here are six simple ways to green your laundry routine—and maybe even save a little cash in the process.

1. Wear Clothes More Than Once

One of the easiest ways to reduce your laundry's environmental impact is simply to do less of it. Of course, items like underwear, socks, and workout gear should be washed after each use. But other clothes—like jeans, sweaters, and pajamas—can usually be worn more than once before needing a wash. Less laundry means less water, less energy, and less wear and tear on your clothes.

2. DIY Your Laundry Detergent

Most commercial detergents are loaded with synthetic fragrances, dyes, and questionable chemicals. Making your own laundry soap is easier than you might think. All you need is washing soda, borax, and an unscented bar soap. It's better for your health, your wallet, and the planet.

3. Use Vinegar as a Natural Fabric Softener

White vinegar is a simple, effective, and affordable alternative to commercial fabric softeners. Just pour it into the fabric softener compartment of your washing machine—or mix a gallon of vinegar with 30 to 40 drops of your favorite essential oil for soft, fresh-smelling laundry without any artificial fragrances.

4. Save Water and Energy

Older top-loading machines can use up to twice as much water as newer, high-efficiency models. If a new washer isn't in the budget right now, there are still a few easy ways to cut down:

  • Only wash full loads

  • Use the cold water setting

  • Skip the dryer when you can and line-dry your laundry

5. Skip the Bleach

Chlorine bleach is tough on the environment and on your skin. For bright whites, try these safer alternatives:

  • Hang your laundry in the sun for a natural whitening effect

  • Add ¼ to ½ cup of lemon juice to your wash cycle

6. Try Wool Dryer Balls

Felted wool dryer balls are a great alternative to dryer sheets and liquid softeners. They help clothes dry faster, reduce static, and soften fabrics naturally.
