Back to Basics, Part 4: Salt

Salt on counter

This month we're turning to an everyday pantry staple: salt. This humble ingredient is not just for seasoning your favorite dishes, it can also be a potent and eco-friendly ally in your cleaning arsenal!

Scrubbing Surfaces: Salt's coarse texture makes it an excellent abrasive cleaner for various surfaces. Mix salt with a bit of water to create a paste, and use it to scrub away stubborn stains on countertops, sinks, and cookware. Its abrasive nature is particularly effective on grease and grime.

Cast Iron Savior: If you're a cast iron cookware enthusiast, salt is your best friend. To remove stuck-on food and maintain the seasoning, sprinkle salt onto a hot, dirty pan and scrub with a stiff brush. The salt acts as a gentle abrasive without damaging the seasoned surface.

Coffee and Tea Stain Remover: Those stubborn coffee and tea stains on your mugs or countertops are no match for salt. Mix salt with a bit of water to form a paste, then use it to scrub away the stains. Your surfaces will be gleaming in no time!

Grease Spill Absorber: If you experience a cooking oil spill in your kitchen, sprinkle salt over the affected area immediately. The salt will absorb the oil, making it easier to clean up the mess.

Natural Copper and Brass Polish: Create a paste by mixing salt with vinegar or lemon juice. Apply it to tarnished copper or brass items, let it sit for a few minutes, and then scrub gently with a cloth or sponge. Rinse away and watch your metals shine!

Grout Reviver: Dirty or discolored grout can make your bathroom or kitchen tiles look dingy. Make a thick paste with salt and water, apply it to the grout lines, and scrub with an old toothbrush. It will help restore the grout's original color.

Natural Rust Remover: Have rust on your metal tools or surfaces? Sprinkle salt on the rusty spots and squeeze lemon juice over it. Allow it to sit for a few hours and then scrub away the rust. It's a natural way to restore metal items.

Salt is a simple, affordable, and effective way to tackle various cleaning tasks around your home while keeping it eco-friendly. Stay tuned for next month’s installment in our back-to-basics cleaning series and discover how these everyday ingredients can simplify your cleaning routine!
